Lyric explanation: The first verse is paraphrased from the book of Revelations, in which aspects of Christianity’s “hell” are depicted. If you have ever watched the documentary Earthlings or Dominion (Australian), these depictions closely resemble the inside of a modern animal slaughterhouse/abattoir. In Australia and other parts of the world, pigs are routinely and legally gassed alive in a gas chamber where they burn to death from the inside out due to Carbon Dioxide poisoning. Once “stunned”, animals are hung upside down by their legs and their throat is slit. They bleed out slowly and are hacked to pieces until nothing more than a carcass is left. The reference to the “devil” is an analogy for humanity, as we enslave, torture, rape and slaughter trillions of animals yearly (this includes sea life). The second verse is self-explanatory. We can all agree that a butcher shop smells of rotting, decaying flesh and preservative chemicals. A slaughterhouse is worse, as the floor is often a pool of blood, faeces and other body fluids that are left behind when the animal’s lives are taken. “The second death” - It is also common for animals to have their throat slit and not die immediately, they are commonly plunged into a “scalding tank” while still alive, or skinned and dismembered alive, thus the second experience of suffering. Imagine having to experience multiple tortures before you finally die.
