There are no compromises you can make in a system of production-for-profit. Animal welfare laws can’t absolve the suffering.
Bigger pens, better feed, room to ruffle their feathers;

Or gas to the lungs
Or a cranium caved in with a blunt object.

You can try and re-write the definition of “humane” treatment but the objective will always be the same.
To get the bodies on the shelves as quick and efficiently as possible.
Nicely hacked into presentable pieces, cling-wrapped and usually slapped with a picture of green grass, blue skies and sunshine;
THINGS THAT NEVER EXISTED IN THEIR WORLD.
